Help A Dog That Has Nearly
Drowned
What to do if your dog nearly
drowns.
The first and most important step is
to remove the water from its lungs.
To do this, hold the dog upside down
holding it by the stomach (hold a small dog by its hind legs)
and let the water run out of the mouth and nose .
Then place the dog on its right side on
the ground and give artificial respiration
Check the heart beat and the pulse (inside of the mid-thigh)
.
If you do not find a pulse, begin the CPR
process, in addition to artificial respiration, and continue
until breathing and heart beat are steady .
If the dog does not show any signs of
improvement after 10 minutes of rescue intervention, CPR has
not been successful and can be stopped.
If a dog drowns in cold water, it will
also suffer hypothermia, making its chances of rescue better
even though it may have been underwater for a long
time.
A common complication of near drowning
is inhalation pneumonia.
A visit to the veterinarian is vital
once you have completed the initial first-aid
treatment.
